What is a rhinoceros doing at Stevns Klint?

ZOO’s spectacular installation ‘Nature is Unsteady’ is moving to Boesdalsvej 14 at Stevns Klint Experience. The 8.5-metre-tall rhinoceros is inspired by Klodsmajor and, from 14 July until October, will serve as a reminder of nature’s vulnerability and invite us to reflect on our shared planet.

From 14 July, an 8.5-metre-tall rhinoceros will take up residence at Boesdalsvej 14, near Stevns Klint Experience. This will happen when Copenhagen Zoo’s spectacular installation ‘Naturen Vakler’ moves in to stand guard at the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The artwork will be positioned as a striking conversation-starter right where the earth bears the traces of one of history’s greatest mass extinctions.

It takes a proper, sturdy sentinel to guard one of the world’s most important natural history treasures. And that’s exactly what’s coming. Right here at the gateway to the World Heritage Site itself, the enormous rhinoceros arrives to sound the alarm and invite reflection. Placed side by side with the traces of the great upheavals of the past, the installation is intended to remind us of nature’s balance – and of the mark we, as humans, are making on our shared planet today.

When the balance of nature is challenged

66 million years ago, life on Earth changed forever when an asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs and more than half of all life. The thin layer of fish scales in the cliff is the world’s best-preserved evidence of the event, and it is precisely this historical context of life’s vulnerability that makes the partnership between the Stevns Klint Experience visitor centre and the ZOO a natural fit.

The installation itself is inspired by the classic family game ‘Jenga’. The tower, over eight metres high, is built from 36 massive wooden blocks, symbolising the foundations of nature. When one block is removed, the foundation becomes less stable – just as the balance of nature is affected when species disappear today.

About the Boesdal Limestone Quarry

Biodiversity and humanity’s interaction with nature are central themes at Stevns Klint Experience, where the educational programme draws parallels between the evolution of the past and the natural world of today. A living example of this is the adjacent Boesdal Limestone Quarry, which nature has now reclaimed. Here, protected species such as the common lizard and the rare moonwort thrive – an indomitable plant whose genus has roots stretching all the way back to the time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. The area clearly demonstrates nature’s enormous capacity to thrive when given the space to do so.

A unique platform for dialogue

Since Stevns Klint was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, annual visitor numbers have risen from around 100,000 to 250,000. This makes the area an ideal platform for dialogue, explains Rune Erbs Ledet, director of Stevns Klint Experience:

“The installation *Naturen Vakler* gives us a unique opportunity to weave biodiversity into a narrative that many people are already curious about. When hundreds of thousands of people visit Stevns Klint, it gives us a powerful platform to encourage reflection and conversation about the natural world of which we are a part and for which we have an indisputable responsibility to care for.”

For Copenhagen Zoo, the visit to Stevns is a natural synergy. Chief Executive Pernille Mehl explains:

“Stevns Klint reminds us that the loss of species can alter entire ecosystems. That is why I am proud that ‘Nature is Wavering’ is being exhibited here. The installation has been created as a conversation starter about biodiversity and the responsibility we all have to protect the species and ecosystems we still have the chance to preserve.”

Together, the history of the fish trap and the ZOO’s installation form a clear common thread. It is a call to reflect on the impact we are having on nature today – and what we are passing on to our children and future generations. The installation can be experienced on arrival at Stevns Klint Experience at Boesdalsvej 14 from 14 July until October.

FACTS ABOUT NATURE ARE UNCERTAIN

Height: 8.54 metres.
Construction: Consists of 36 solid Douglas fir logs (approx. 200 kg per log), locally produced at Ølstykke Sawmill. The ZOO is planting an equivalent number of new trees in Vesterskoven in collaboration with Skovdyrkerne.
Materials: The rhinoceros consists of a metal skeleton with a surface of papier-mâché and polymer plaster. The artwork is 100% plastic-free.
