A school service with 66 million years of history – and its sights set on wonder and perspective

Stevns Klint Experience is now launching its new educational programme, the Stevns Klint School Service. At a time when there is a strong focus within the education sector on creating space for personal development and deep engagement, the new school programme is specifically designed to promote open processes, sensory experiences and the children’s own voices, set directly against the backdrop of the World Heritage Site.

Following a successful trial period, Stevns Klint Experience is now launching its new, permanent school programme. The programme takes its inspiration from the distinctive landscape of the Boesdal Limestone Quarry and the exhibition at the visitor centre. Here, the traces of the fifth mass extinction – the catastrophe that, 66 million years ago, changed life on Earth forever – provide the backdrop for the presentation of a crucial chapter in the planet’s history. The launch also marks an important step in the strategic foundation for Stevns Klint Experience. The aim is to be the place where the significance of Stevns Klint in Earth’s history is brought together, made tangible and relevant to people, so that visitors leave with a new perspective, not just a definitive answer. The ambitious roll-out of the school programme is underpinned by a strong financial foundation. The project is supported by the A.P. Møller Foundation with 1.85 million kroner and the Augustinus Foundation with 1.85 million kroner as part of a three-year development and implementation project specifically designed to strengthen the communication of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Stevns Klint to children and young people.

Focusing on the process and curiosity

The Stevns Klint School Programme has been developed as an active, outdoor learning environment that complements day-to-day teaching in the classroom. The programmes are designed with great respect for the pupils’ own lived experiences. The aim is not to rush towards a predetermined answer, but rather to spark the pupils’ curiosity and give them a sense of being a valuable part of both the community and the world they themselves are helping to shape. In their lessons, pupils explore, amongst other things, the open-ended question of what has value – both in the past, the present and the future. By combining natural sciences with creative subjects such as art, and using familiar objects from the children’s own everyday lives, world heritage suddenly becomes a tangible reality. Through dialogue, play and physical activity, the body’s experiences are linked to new, broad concepts. The aim is to strengthen the pupils’ agency and empowerment – and to give them a profound and enjoyable experience of how their voices and reflections are an important part of history.

Communication that makes an impact

It is precisely this sensory, process-oriented and participatory approach that underpins the programmes. Nana Legh-Smith, an outreach consultant at Stevns Klint Experience and the developer of the school programme, explains:

“When teaching moves out into the countryside and engages the senses, the body and creativity, it creates space to reflect on the big questions. We want to offer a safe space where learning isn’t tied to quick answers, but where wonder and experience are the goal in themselves. When we let the pupils explore things together, completely different and profound conversations emerge, in which the children’s own perspectives and curiosity become the real driving force.”

Enthusiasm on the board

The educational foundation has also generated great enthusiasm amongst the board of Stevns Klint Experiences. Linda Nørgaard Andersen, deputy director at the Workers’ Museum in Copenhagen and a board member, says:

“Communication is the key to fostering both understanding and wonder – and to building a bridge between the past and the present. Stevns Klint Experience has chosen an incredibly strong approach to communication, because the framework allows for open exploration, where pupils are given the opportunity to actively experience and engage with the World Heritage Site together. I am delighted with the development of the Stevns Klint School Programme, which, in the finest possible way, invites children and young people into the narrative and equips them to understand and appreciate our shared natural and cultural heritage.”

The teaching programmes are initially tailored to the various year groups in primary school, but will also be offered to secondary schools from 2027.
