Stevns Lighthouse Centre

The tall lighthouse towers over the edge of the cliff, guiding both ships and birds. Next to it stands the small lighthouse, which is more than 200 years old. The site also holds stories from the Cold War.

Stunning views of the fields and the sea

The area around Stevns Lighthouse, at 41 metres above sea level, is the highest point on Stevns Klint.

If you come here via the Stevns Klint footpath, you can see how the Cold War has left its mark on large parts of the cliff. The footpaths turn into wide tracks that lead you past the garage complex and the old barracks before you reach the two lighthouses.

By car or bike, you’ll enter through the old gate, which once kept all unauthorised visitors securely out. Now everyone is welcome to enjoy a view that takes your breath away, whether you’re standing at the edge or up in the 27-metre-high lighthouse.

Bring a packed lunch

The cosy atmosphere and beautiful views invite you to bring a packed lunch or your afternoon coffee and enjoy it at one of the table and bench sets or on a blanket on the grass.

Exhibitions

There is a permanent, free exhibition about the World Heritage Site and the fossils found at Stevns. There are also often art exhibitions.

Access and opening hours

The lighthouse and the lighthouse keeper’s house are open on selected days of the week. Check the current opening times at stevns.dk, but the area is open to cars and bicycles every day from sunrise to sunset.

Pedestrians can access the area via the Stevns Klint footpath around the clock.

  • The story of the two lads

Adjoining the lighthouse keeper’s cottage is the original lighthouse, a curved section of the building facing the sea.

The lighthouse and the keeper’s house date from 1818, and it was not until 1878 that the tall lighthouse was erected. It is built of chalk stone, quarried from Stevns Klint – back when quarrying and cutting into the cliff was permitted.

The lighthouse is still in use and shines brightly in the dark.

It is possible to visit both the lighthouse keeper’s house and the tall lighthouse – see opening times on the Stevns Municipality website.

  • The Cold War

As well as being the perfect location for a lighthouse visible from the Øresund, the site is also ideal for monitoring those waters.

That is why the lookout post stands almost right on the edge, so that staff could keep an eye on and record which ships were passing through Danish waters – with particular attention paid to ships from the Soviet Union.

The area was also part of Copenhagen’s air defence system and bears clear traces of the HAWK batteries that were once stationed there.

  • A special spot for birdwatchers

Stevns Klint serves not only as a maritime landmark, but also as a navigational aid for a large number of migratory birds. This makes for some truly special experiences in spring and autumn, but there are good opportunities to watch birds all year round, particularly at Stevns Lighthouse Centre and Mandehoved.

Since 2007, a pair of peregrine falcons has been breeding at Mandehoved, and more peregrine falcons have arrived along the cliff over the years.

You can read more about the species that have been observed at Stevns Klint on the Danish Ornithological Society’s website.
